KoBold Metals Outlines Ambition to Position DRC as Global Lithium Powerhouse
KoBold Metals Targets DRC Lithium Leadership with Data-Driven Mining Strategy at Manono
KoBold Metals DRC, the Congolese subsidiary of US-based exploration company KoBold Metals, says it aims to help position the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as a global lithium powerhouse through advanced technology, data intelligence, and modern exploration methods.
Speaking at the 11th edition of Expo Béton 2026 in Kalemie, Tanganyika Province, Managing Director Benjamin Katabuka said the company is working to transform mineral exploration by using data-driven techniques rather than conventional geological approaches.
“Our American mining technology company is ready to position the DRC as a global lithium powerhouse by combining technology, data intelligence and economic diplomacy,” Katabuka said.
He explained that KoBold Metals differs from traditional mining firms by applying advanced analytics and machine learning tools to identify high-value mineral deposits more efficiently.
Katabuka highlighted lithium as a critical mineral for the global energy transition, driven by demand for electric vehicle batteries and large-scale energy storage systems.
“Lithium is one of the most sought-after minerals globally. The transition to clean energy depends heavily on this resource,” he said.
He added that the Manono project area hosts one of the world’s largest known lithium deposits, positioning the DRC to expand its role in the global battery minerals supply chain alongside its established production of cobalt and copper.
KoBold Metals is currently conducting geological sampling and analysis as part of its ongoing exploration activities in the region.
Expo Béton RDC 2026 opened on May 27 and concludes on May 30 in Kalemie.
